GALA by Lynne Shapiro

$16.00

Lynne Shapiro’s Gala is a collection of poems that unfolds like a film.

Spliced with flashbacks and asides, the poems move through myriad cultural and poetic registers—from Surrealist tropes to Hollywood movies to Greek mythology—showcasing a unique voice that echoes the collage aesthetic of the artworks themselves. Gala is an artist's coming-of-age story, and insists that a woman’s voice, in all its wonder and indignation, shall not be erased.

Lynne Shapiro is a poet and essayist living in Hoboken, New Jersey. Her poetry has been published in over 200 journals and magazines. She has been writer-in-residence in six countries, including Lithuania, Morocco, and Spain.

Originally from Ozone Park, Queens, Lynne grew up in Culver City, California. She studied Comparative Literature at San Diego State and earned an MA from Brandeis University. In the 1980s Lynne worked at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. She has also been on the faculty of Parsons School of Design and Hudson County Community College in New Jersey.
